چکیده

Research has shown that failing to recognize and understand organizational subgroups, their cultures, and their reward systems can result in a failure of system adoption. Infrastructure building projects for science are complex forms of collaborative work that involve many subgroups. As part of an ongoing research project, we use ethnographic methods to explore the roles, categories, and relationships that are sometimes taken for granted in cyberinfrastructure research and development. We find a diversity of stakeholders and stakes in the development of a cyberinfrastructure for environmental genomics that transcends categories such as “users,” “designers,”

Toward cyberinfrastructure to facilitate collaboration and reproducibility for marine integrated ecosystem assessments

There is a growing need for cyberinfrastructure to support science-based decision making in management of natural resources. In particular, our motivation was to aid the development of cyberinfrastructure for Integrated Ecosystem Assessments (IEAs) for marine ecosystems. The IEA process involves analysis of natural and socio-economic information based on diverse and disparate sources of data, r...

Running head: END-USER DEVELOPMENT AND META-DESIGN: FOUNDATIONS FOR CULTURES OF PARTICIPATION 1 End-User Development and Meta-Design: Foundations for Cultures of Participation

The first decade of the World-Wide Web predominantly enforced a clear separation between designers and consumers. New technological developments, such as the emerging and expanding cyberinfrastructure and Web 2.0 architectures, have emerged to support a participatory Web and social computing. These developments are the foundations for a fundamental shift from consumer cultures (specialized in p...

A socio-technical framework for cyberinfrastructure design

As the concept of cyberinfrastructure (CI) matures people question whether it is something that can be designed or built. These doubts may stem from considering design as a time-limited process or the lack of a framework in which to view, integrate, and compare knowledge relevant to e-Science applications. This paper addresses these issues by identifying the components of a preliminary framewor...

Foregrounding the Cyberinfrastructure Center as Cyberinfrastructure Steward

A recent uptick in studies of cyberinfrastructure-enabled research projects has advanced our limited understanding of the use, development and management of cyberinfrastructure (CI) resources. Conspicuously absent from most of these studies, though, is any consideration of the key roles played by supercomputer centers, or what we term „CI centers‟, in CI-enabled research networks. This position...
